Fort Benton --- The old fur trading fort on the side of this town was named on Christmas night, 1850, when Alexander Culbertson, who had charge of the post, proposed a toast to Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. Senator Benton had saved the American Fur Company?s license when it was charged with selling liquor to the Blackfeet Indians, and Culbertson was properly grateful.
