Missoula --- Duncan MacDonald, factor of the Hudson?s Bay trading post in the Mission valley, interpreted the Salish ?Inn-mae-soo-latkhu? as ?Sparkling River.? In conversation this came out ?Nm-i-sule.? An other version is the word meant ?place of fright or terror,? referring to the Hell Gate just east of the City, where the Blackfeet regularly ambushed the Flatheads on their way to the buffalo hunting grounds east of the mountains.
