Yellowstone County Courthouse of 1905
Thanks Betty for retyping the TextThe dedication ceremony for a new $125,000 Yellowstone County courthouse and in1905 symbolized the dawning of a new age. For the next 50 years, the court house would serve as the center of political life in Billings. In addition, its bold, assertive nonclassical style, which to Americans at the turn of the century represented power, culture, and maturity, represented a compelling architectural statement of the town's resurgent optimism about its future. Certainly all signs pointed to good times and prosperity, in 1900 Billings had 3221 residents; already by 1905 that number had grown to almost 7000 people. The new county courthouse, in large part, was built to meet the demands of the sudden population boom. New commercial and industrial enterprises had multiplied as well. A historian in 1907 observed that "the growth of Billings has been the wonder of the state. from the little struggling village it had always been since the boom it has grown and to be one of the principal cities of the state of Montana. It is again properly designed the "Magic City".
