I am a Senior now and a product of Montana and proud of it. My grandfather homesteaded in Yellowstone County in 1914 and left for Canada in 1926 but my daddy stayed. My mother was raised up on a homestead farm near Lavina in Golden Valley County.
I found this site by accident. I am searching for any information or clue as to why my grandfather would have sold his homestead farm to Carleton College of Minnesota in 1924. Does anyone know if the College had an experimental station there? I understand why a Swede from the woods in Sweden and later lumber camps in Wisconsin would be confounded by dryland farming but I am curious why the Minnesota college was interested in it.

Enjoyed seeing the info on Montana, do you have any other states registered on your web site? I couldn't get into any others and think my folks would love to see the site and may have things to add about other states.

I saw the photos of the old sod fortress near Ft. Benton, MT. My mother told a story that her grandmother (or great-grandmother?) was the 4th white woman born at a fort (Fort Benton?) in Montana. Family history that I have traced thus far bears out the story, but I lose it at the fort. Is there any information out there on birth records kept at this fort, or others in Montana in the early to mid 1800s?

My father, Percy Neville lived in Dooley and then spent many years in Plentywood. He was in the implement business and sold Chrysler & Plymouths, farmed, and owned Neville Transit. We moved to Missoula when I was 11. Went to MSU, flew fighters in the USAF and then off to Pan American World airways for 27 years. Get to Plentywood about every 10yrs?

This is an interesting website. Have been researching my own pioneer family in Custer (c.1885) and Flathead Counties (c. 1900). Homesteads on Rosebud Creek and in Coram just south of West Glacier Nat'l Park. People still living at the latter, and reservation extended on ranch at former.
